The other day I had full day of private sessions and classes to teach. As I was talking to everyone and listening to their stories and how Pilates makes them feel I had a major aha moment.
Hardly anyone knows how I got started and why I stuck with it. When I first started Pilates I couldn't possibly have imagined how it would change my life.
As I sit here writing this it's been about 12 years since my first Pilates Mat class and shortly after that I started taking lessons on the equipment.
When I was in my mid 20's I wasn't in the best shape of my life. I was working a very stressful job with long hours and I hadn't been taking care of myself. At one point I decided I should start running to loose some weight and I also felt I was missing something in my life and really didn't know what it was.
What happened after I started taking Pilates was just amazing. The injuries I was dealing with from running started to just go away. Then I realized it was a great stress outlet from my job. I started by attending 1 private session a week during my lunch hour and a few classes at other times during the week. It wasn't long after I started I was hooked. I started to notice all sorts of changes.
My balance, coordination, and stamina all became drastically better. The bigger change was finally figuring out what I wanted to do with my life.
One of my most memorable moments was during a private session and I saw few other clients at the studio. These clients stuck out in my head for a few reasons.
One woman was going through Cancer treatment and this method of exercise was keeping her strong and giving her some determination. She was doing stuff I only hoped I could do some day.
Another man was using Pilates to help with Parkinson's.
My session that day wasn't the most productive since I kept asking my instructor all sorts of questions on how the training works, how can the method help people.
I'm pretty sure that was the day I decided this is what I wanted to do with my life. I didn't know when or how, but I thought I want to become a Pilates instructor and start to help people. Little did I know that the journey would lead me to where I am now.
To sum this all up. I started thinking it would make me feel better and my journey led me down a path to finding what I truly love in love and that's helping others.
If you find yourself stressed, in pain, or perhaps just a little bit lost why not give Pilates a try you never know where it might lead.
