What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
When my husband Peter and I first started dating he was already doing Crossfit and was always talking about it. He really wanted me to try it but at the time I was living in Norfolk and anybody who knows anything about Norfolk people can tell you we rarely leave Norfolk! There was no way I was driving all the way to Virginia Beach to go to a gym when I lived half a block from the YMCA. I told him if one ever opened up in Norfolk I would try it. So about a month or two later the first Crossfit gym in Norfolk opened up and he was all over it, encouraging me to go check it out. They had a Saturday where anyone could come try it out so I went with one of my friends. Needless to say I loved it and I started fundamentals a couple weeks later.
What was your first impression? How has that changed?
It was intimidating! There were so many movements that I was like "there's no way I'll ever be able to do that!" But I've realized that hard work and a ton of patience pays off in the Crossfit world and that if I keep working at it I will eventually achieve my goals.
What was your first “bright spot”?
I know we just started them here, but I’m sure you had some way back when you started at 757. My proudest moments all came from lifting heavy. I just thought it was so awesome that my body could do so much more than I ever thought possible. I sometimes look back at old pictures and videos of me lifting what I now consider to be light weights for me and it gets me super pumped! Looking back now and seeing that I can do an entire workout at a weight that used to be a one or three rep max is a pretty incredible feeling.
What are you working on now?
I've really been trying to nurse my shoulder so I can get back on the pull up rig and also have been focusing on form and technique in the snatch and clean and jerk. The oly class has been a huge success for me in terms of how much my form on those two lifts has improved over the last several months and I'm really happy with that.
What’s your favorite CrossFit Reanimated memory?
As far as achievements for me, my progress on muscle ups. Every workout with muscle ups that I was able to complete I would have this huge grin on my face! It's such a technical movement but is so fun and so rewarding, and having the coaches tell you they are proud of your improvements always helps make you feel good!. The coaching here has been super supportive and encouraging, which helps make me want to be here more and more.
