Age: 28

Occupation:  US Navy

Which class do you usually attend? 5:30 pm with the occasional 6:30 am appearance

Favorite WOD: I love all of the Hero WODs. Murph might be my favorite because he is one of my personal heroes, but anytime I can shed some sweat for those who gave it all is humbling and inspiring!

Favorite Lift/Movement: I like most of them (except the press…) but body weight movements like burpees and box jumps are towards the top of the list!

How long have you been CrossFitting? 16 months

What keeps you coming back? The people. I love the post workout high, but it’s the community and hanging out and catching up with friends while working out that keeps me coming back. I also thrive on competition, so that doesn’t hurt either.

We all find CrossFit in a different way. Where did your story start? I actually did my first CrossFit workout in college, long before I knew what it was. I did another class with my best friend taught by a Level 1 coach about 5 years ago. She told me I had good form on my deadlift and that I could be an “Olympic weightlifter”. I didn’t have a clue what that meant at the time, but took at as an insult because it meant I must look huge or something. Looking back on it, it was a really nice compliment that I was too insecure to understand.  Fastforward to 2014, I came to Reanimated after meeting Dan and Sara in a social setting and they convinced me to give it a try, and swore my shoulders wouldn’t “get big” if I didn’t want them to. After the first class, I was hooked and never looked back.

Do you remember your First WOD? It was a Saturday morning, and I don’t remember exactly what we did, but I remember it was fun! It definitely had some running in it!

How did you end up at CrossFit Reanimated? I had been lifting weights at a normal gym for a few months, with an occasional WOD thrown in at work with my boss. I always knew that I would like the competition, but I was afraid of becoming “one of them”. Through mutual friends, I realized it was time to get over my fear of CrossFit and try it out. I bought a Black Friday special, and showed up the next Saturday.

What is your athletic background? I was a competitive cheerleader for 15 years until I joined the Navy. Since then I have picked up a few intermural sports and have a love/hate relationship with running.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle and level of fitness? I am definitely in much better shape, and continue to progress, but more importantly I have become more confident in my abilities. Translating to everything in my life, not just fitness, I am more aware and in tune with myself. I eat healthier, move more, and am just happier. I have been able to lean on CrossFit (and my Reanimated family) during times where everything outside the gym didn’t seem to be going well, and that’s confidence boosting in its own right!

What is the One Thing you have done here that you never thought you could do? I don’t think I ever thought doing pullups would be kinda easy. They are still a challenge in large doses, but being able to hop on the bar and bust out a set of 5 any day of the week is really cool.

What motivates/inspires you? Competition!...and the community. I love that CrossFit is a competition with yourself, but it’s also fun to push and get pushed by other athletes around you. The generosity and support that the CrossFit community shows to our military and first responders makes me realize I found the type of people I want to surround myself with.

Name one goal/personal achievement that you would like to achieve through CrossFit? My muscle up is a goal that I can’t wait to achieve. For me, being able to handle my own body weight will be the basis for all my goals. Lifting heavy is cool, but I want to be able to get myself out of any predicament that could arise, even if that means pulling myself up and over an obstacle.

What goals have you achieved in CrossFit? Double Unders, kipping pullups, toes to bar…but I think the biggest thing that I have achieved (that I never even realized was a goal) is that I feel good about myself.

Hobbies/interests outside of CrossFit?  I love adventures, sports, snowboarding, traveling, baking, and eating!

Tell me about your diet: I am finishing up the Whole Life Challenge right now, so I am eating fairly strict paleo with some exceptions. I would like to get to the point where I eat like that 80-90% of the time, and don’t feel guilty about indulging once in a while! If you asked me a year ago, I would have told you that I ate pretty much whatever I wanted…though it was never very processed or too bad. I switched up the diet once I started seeing results in CrossFit because I wanted to see how much more I could achieve. It seems to be working J

Any advice for new members? The hardest part was walking through the doors for the first time…so you are over the hump! I didn’t want to be one of “those Crossfit people”, but now am incredibly happy to say that I am. Keep working and you will without a doubt see progress, and have a blast doing it!
